Susan Lincoln employs shimmering light-emitting materials and a strikingly-restrained colour palette to create immersive art experiences. In some works lead crystals, reflective beads and strings of light hang in generous loops like chandeliers. In others, white-on-white works- on-paper and found objects feature on gallery walls. Further works present sculptural structures composed with a bower-bird-like dedication to transparent materials. An ethereal levity unites them all. Lincoln’s intuitive practice channels a series of informative life experiences. Tracing elements in her work and studies, including a degree in interior design, back to their childhood origins, we find her interest in the fusion of art and architecture within memories of attending Mass. A secular commitment to spirituality and an awareness of the inter- relationality of all things continue to pulse through her practice. Her work also honours matrilineal legacies and feminine principles, as seen in her use of natural elements, and draws on childhood fascinations with light, Science Fiction and ghost stories. Finally, Lincoln’s work conjures connections to an international roster of artists from Christian Boltanski to Felix Gonzalez-Torres, James Turrell, Hilma af Klint and Phyllida Barlow.
