About Peter Summers

My fascination with the transformative power of paint upon canvas defies adequate description; the sheer pleasure of painting remains a profoundly personal experience. To me, painting is an intricate choreography of brush, pigment and painting medium, as I guide the paint from left to right, navigating its journey upwards and downwards. It's a venture into uncharted territory, a journey charged with modest victories and unforeseen revelations. Central to my artistic exploration is the recurring motif of a circular form. This circular representation encompasses the intricacies of the mind, the thoughts that shape one's identity, and the cycles that define our lives. The circle holds life's energy, it embodies the boundless journey of existence, with no clear beginning or end. My obsession with painting is simple: I strip away the layers, unearthing the innate essence of painting. I am drawn to the fundamental, driven by a desire to expose the raw potential that paint carries when united with canvas. This act of reduction, of stripping away, is where the essence of my artistic expression thrives, as I strive to unearth the purity buried within the layers. I create work that is subtle, reductive and expressive. My canvas becomes a sanctuary of open expanses, distilled to their very essence. Colour that appears singular is in fact an amalgamation of countless hues converging in harmonious unison. Compositional harmony, in my painting, is a subjective journey guided by instinct, it is a relentless quest for balance. I find myself in a conversation that unfolds through rotating the canvas, each turn revealing new facets of elements, composition, colour, and spatial division. This contemplative ritual guides me toward the elusive threshold where compositional harmony emerges, a moment when the painting resonates. My creative process is not always linear. An initial vision for composition can be overtaken by the painterly process itself. To rectify and refine, I employ at times a vigorous application of thick, tactile layers of paint. It's a process of correction that is, paradoxically, an act of creation in its own right. Layer upon layer, using various colours of opaque and translucent oil paints, I construct and orchestrate a visual symphony of hue, light, and emotion. The interplay between colour and luminosity, gives rise to an image that beckons the beholder to pause and reflect. I hope that the apparent quietude that underpins my work, is an initial transitory stop; inviting the viewer to venture inward, to traverse the corridors of their own consciousness, and forge an intimate connection with the present moment.
