About Hugo Caddous

After a drawing class in 1998 at Jussieu University in Paris Hugo Caddous, Hugo Caddous has never looked back. After Completing a degree in biology at Jussieu University, Paris and a diploma in engraving at Ecole Estienne and later in 2006 at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, he co-founded his own drawing studio Caddous & Alvarez in Paris with established names in the fields of interior design and luxury fashion. He has since been developing more personal and pictorial work in parallel, exploring colour and matter. His melancholic landscapes echo his abstract portraits. The landscape as a mirror of the soul. In the words of philosopher Henri-Frédéric Amiel we find a perfect illustration of Caddous' work "Every landscape is a state of mind". Each painting was conceived as an idealised landscape, immaculate and untouched by the hand of the man. The works are built from slivers of memories and from the perfect vision which we have of a moment in the past. Ultimately, what remains is a concentration of memories, a snapshot almost too smooth and clean to be true. Each image becomes the stereotype of a half forgotten Eden, where one would like to find oneself for a moment. The colours become fanciful and the vegetation takes on a quality of the decoratively Victorian. Created in Paris over the last year, this series obviously echoes my own frustrations and desires to flee the present reality. It was conceived as an escape to a place where one can lose oneself and transpose one's own memories and aspirations. The various planes and layers of colour, which build upon themselves in each painting, create a small theatrical set. All that one has to do is to enter the scene.
