Veronica Cay

Veronica Cay is an accomplished Australian Contemporary figurative artist. Focusing on the practices of drawing and sculpture, Veronica reflects upon what it means to be human: seeking connections, testing resilience and acknowledging frailties. With a practice that is heavily grounded in observational work and life drawing, Veronica creates characters that resist objectification and open a dialogue about the body experienced from within. Time spent slowly observing and connecting to the human landscape in the life drawing studio has become crucial to Veronica’s process. She uses experimental, lyrical and expressive mark-making to look closely at the human condition, capturing a beauty that radiates from below the surface, irrespective of age or gender. Veronica has had several solo exhibitions including "conversations with my Aunt Anthea" at Polson Art (2021), "Adorn" at Rochfort Gallery Sydney with Izette Felthun (2021) and "2blues&afroginatawneysuit" joint exhibition with David Green at CoolArtGallery (2019). She has been a selected finalist in many national art prizes including Clayton Utz Art Prize Queensland (2021 and 2019), Sunshine Coast Art Prize Queensland (2020), Lethbridge 20,000 small works award Brisbane (2020 and 2019), Lyn McCrae Drawing Prize Noosa Regional Gallery (2019 and 2018), Adelaide Perry Drawing Award (2017), and Jacarandah Drawing Prize Queensland (JADA) (2016). Her works are held in private collections across Australia, United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Canada, United States, Germany, New Zealand, Italy and Portugal, and in public collections including Siena Institute of Art, Italy and National Fibre Collection,Tamworth NSW.
