About Lynne Wallis

Born and raised in Sydney, Lynne Wallis has lived near Byron Bay in the Northern Rivers region of NSW since 1989. She gained a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Diploma of Education at the University of NSW in the early 1970’s and began her career as a high school English teacher in 1976. After many years working as a teacher, Lynne returned to her lifelong love of visual art and began landscape painting in 2002. After several years of self taught discovery and learning and a solo exhibition in Byron Bay, NSW, in 2014, she returned to university to study Visual Arts at Southern Cross University, Lismore, gaining a post graduate Diploma in Visual Arts and winning the Chancellor’s Award at the 2016 SCU Graduation exhibition. From this came her second solo exhibition in 2018 in Ballina, NSW. "I am a landscape painter based in Northern NSW. I have long regarded landscape as, “a place of enlightenment and magic”, as John Olsen described it. Starting my art career late in life, I paint landscape as a way to understand and represent my emotional relationship with the natural world that has evolved over the course of my life. The paintings grow from first hand experiences coupled with memories. My focus is on the essential elements of a landscape, whether that be air, water or stone, creating a reality that transcends specific locations, a reality that evokes the timeless qualities of the natural world and celebrates the transient but precious nature of every moment. I aim to create meditative spaces that invite quiet reflection. The common thread in all my work is to create a beautiful experience for the viewer that is a response to the image created as well as to the medium’s stillness and materiality and to create work that reflects my acute awareness that life is short and every moment matters."
