About Elizabeth O'Connor
Creating is profoundly ingrained within Elizabeth O'Connor's DNA. Holding a Bachelor of Arts-
Visual Arts and fuelled by experimentation and various mediums, her diverse and explorative
creative practice spanning 30+ years, navigates a variety of genres including painting, drawing,
collage, sculpture, graphics and fashion.
Elizabeth’s sculptural journey embraces the mesmerising allure of transformation, where ordinary
metamorphoses into extraordinary. Fascinated by the ethereal essence of a seemingly
insignificant, simplistic object like a piece of paper or a cutting of fabric, she discovers a
metaphorical portal in which to explore the complexities of its humble existence through the
crumpling, scrunching, folding, layering, wrapping, pleating, gathering and draping of disparate
mediums.
Within the folds of the mundane, an unpretentious aesthetic lies concealed in her "Colour Crush"
series. Using the force of her own body weight, she coaxes the metal sheet to surrender its two-
dimensional rigidity, hand guiding it into the realm of multidimensionality to reveal an alluring three-
dimensional sculptural embodiment of bold, minimalist form.
Although Elizabeth’s artworks essentially embrace a liberating absence of predefined signification,
the interplay of colour, light and shadow evokes emotions that transcend the limitations of words.
Each intricate fold, crinkle and contour suggests its own whispered narrative – an invitation for the
viewer to engage with the work and witness the silent dialogue between form and function, chaos
and order, fragility and resilience.
Colour continues to be the unwavering obsession and muse that holds paramount importance
enveloping Elizabeth’s work. Each wall sculpture infuses vitality into the space in which it inhabits,
its presence a truly captivating textural form that powerfully stimulates a profound, resplendent
visual experience.
Throughout her comprehensive career, Elizabeth has travelled extensively for inspiration and
enjoys working collaboratively across multiple creative disciplines in a variety of art forms +
mediums. Residing in Brisbane, her work can be found in both corporate and private collections.
Echoing Elizabeth’s creative practice, artist influencers are varied and include Robert Motherwell,
Franz Kline, Mark Rothko, Cy Twombly, Pierre Soulages, Tony Tuckson, Bram Bogart, Ellsworth
Kelly, Henri Matisse (paper cuts), Clement Meadmore and John Chamberlain.
Works can be commissioned in various colours/sizes to integrate and elevate any space.
“Colour is my absolute obsession.”
