Vanessa Newell - Artist Statement
I paint in a flattened, graphic style that is partly influenced by the plans and drawings I created when working as a Landscape Architect, but also by the reference material I generate. Using photo editing software I overlay historical paintings with contemporary images until I find a powerful composition and a range of values that enable me to create an impactful painting. Often I will explore dozens of combinations before I find one that I am inspired to paint.
My paintings are figurative, inspired by decorative Medieval artworks and ornamental Renaissance paintings, particularly those depicting stories of ancient mythology and folklore. Dramatic compositions and strong contrasts are the two elements of these historical art that I am trying to capture. I am also interested in the concept of duality, which can be found in the contrast between the images and techniques I use to create my work. These works are my contemporary interpretation of classical works and subjects.
